Your Local Guide
Where alpine water meets big mountains. Here are the spots we send all our favorite guests to — gathered over many seasons on the South Shore and around the lake.
Iconic · South Shore
Soft sand, towering pines, and that famous cobalt water. The classic South Shore swim-and-lounge day — easy to reach and great for a big group.
East Shore · Nevada
Turquoise water and giant smooth boulders — the most photographed beach on the lake. ~50 min drive from the cabin. Get there before 9 am in summer or the entrance gate closes for capacity. Shakespeare-festival amphitheater on site July–August.
In town
Right in town with a grassy lawn, paddleboard rentals, and walkable food nearby. The most convenient launch point for a relaxed lake day.
Scenic Cruise
Double-decker paddlewheeler that cruises to Emerald Bay with views of Vikingsholm Castle. Sunset cocktail cruises are the move for a date night or girls trip.
Get on the Water
Rentals are easy to grab along the shore (try Camp Richardson or Action Watersports). Morning water is glassiest — go early for calm paddling before the afternoon breeze picks up.
Quieter alternative
Smaller alpine lake just south of Tahoe, far fewer people, great for a quick swim or paddle when the main lake feels crowded. 15 min drive.
East Shore · Photo stop
Iconic granite outcropping with tiny pines growing out of it — one of the most-photographed Tahoe rocks. Small pullout on Hwy 28 between Sand Harbor and Incline Village.
Don't Miss
The most photographed spot in Tahoe. Walk down to the 1929 Scandinavian-style castle, or just pull over at the overlook for the postcard shot.
Ride to the Top · 0.9 mi from the cabin
Glass-cabin ride climbing 2.4 miles above the lake from Heavenly Village. The observation deck has the best panoramic view in town. Worth it even if you don't ski.
Easy Win
Short, rewarding hike to a waterfall right by Emerald Bay. Big payoff for not much effort — perfect when you want views without a full trek.
Big Adventure · Strenuous
For the ambitious of the group — a challenging climb (~10 mi round-trip, 3,300 ft gain) with sweeping summit views over the lake and surrounding alpine lakes. Start early.
Family-Friendly · Easy
1.5 mi round-trip, mostly flat, ends at a waterfall over Cascade Lake. Kid-doable. Same trailhead area as Eagle Falls.
East Shore · Quick Stop
Short, steep scramble up to a rocky promontory with 360° lake views. ~30 min round-trip. Great sunset spot on the way back from Sand Harbor.
Easy · 25 min drive
Lakeshore trail along two alpine lakes; water taxi available in summer if you don't want to backtrack.
Heidi's Pancake House
Since 1964
A bright-yellow Swiss-chalet institution. Famous pancakes and stuffed crepes — expect a weekend wait, it's worth it.
The Red Hut Café
Since 1959
Retro local favorite. Huge portions and breakfast served all day across several South Tahoe locations.
Driftwood Café
Heavenly Village
Cozy spot — the blueberry French toast and Benedicts are local favorites before the gondola.
Getaway Café

A little out in Meyers and beloved by locals. From-scratch cooking and a homey, friends-and-family feel.
Riva Grill on the Lake

0.9 mi walk · Shuttle from Heavenly Village
The closest mountain — California + Nevada sides. Lift tickets are cheaper online ahead of time. Skip the line by picking up your pass at the cabin before you go.
45 min drive · Locals' favorite
Steeper, deeper, less crowded than Heavenly. Worth the drive on a real powder day. Backcountry-adjacent terrain.
30 min drive · Families
Great for families and intermediate riders. Less of a scene than Heavenly. Reopened with fresh lifts after the 2021 fire.
Snow play · 20 min drive
Sledding and tubing for kids — pay-to-play hill, plus restrooms and warming hut.
Go early.Emerald Bay parking, Eagle Falls, and Sand Harbor fill fast in summer — beat the crowds before 9 am, or visit late afternoon for golden light.
Layer up.Even in summer, high elevation means cool mornings and evenings. Bring a jacket for sunset on the lake.
Hydrate. You're at over 6,000 feet — drink more water than you think you need, especially the first day.
Reserve dinner.Popular lakefront tables book up on weekends, especially Riva and Kalani's. Call ahead a day or two out.
Sand Harbor strategy.Either arrive before 9 am, OR plan a late-afternoon visit (4 pm onwards when the early crowd leaves). It's worth the drive but the parking lot literally closes at capacity.
